During an event in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi utilized Bhashini, an AI-powered Indian language translation tool, to live-translate his Hindi speech into Tamil. This occurrence marked the launch of the second edition of Kashi Tamil Sangamam at Namo Ghat in Varanasi, the Prime Minister’s Lok Sabha constituency.

Operating under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Bhashini harnesses AI to generate language datasets and develop technology solutions based on language.

Bhashini, a government-developed initiative, engaged tens of thousands of contributors across India, who provided data in their native languages. This collaborative effort aimed to establish open-source language datasets, forming a foundation for the creation of diverse language tools. While addressing the audience at the Kashi Tamil Sangamam in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Modi initially urged Tamil-speaking attendees to use earphones for translation before continuing his speech in Hindi. He expressed, “Today, the use of new technology has taken place here through Artificial Intelligence (AI). This is a new beginning, and hopefully, it makes it easier for me to reach you.”

Within his discourse, Modi emphasized Hindu history and the cultural richness of Tamil Nadu and Varanasi. The Kashi Tamil Sangamam aims to promote travel and pilgrimage among Tamililians visiting Varanasi.

As new language translation AI tools emerge, bridging language gaps becomes a priority. Given the cultural disparities and language barriers that pose challenges for BJP’s influence in South India, an AI tool translating Hindi, the dominant language, into various other Indic languages could prove to be a pivotal factor for political parties seeking to strengthen their position on the pan-Indian stage.
