Tesla is likely to launch in India in January. Reports on the American EV manufacturer’s debut are circulating, discussing the timeframe and potential investment destination. It’s claimed that Tesla might announce its India launch during the Vibrant Gujarat Summit next January, possibly choosing Sanand as its base. Now, a state minister confirms Gujarat as Tesla’s preference in India, hinting at an official announcement coming soon.

Rushikesh Patel

Rushikesh Patel, the Health Minister and state government spokesperson for Gujarat, responded to reports about Tesla’s potential India launch next month. Patel confirmed the ongoing discussions between Tesla and the state government for securing land for their manufacturing plant. His statement aligns with SJ Haider, the Additional Chief Secretary (Industries and Mines), who mentioned the central government’s contact with Tesla for establishing a manufacturing facility in India.

Elon Musk & Narender Modi Tesla

Patel expressed the state government’s high hopes that Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, will choose Gujarat for their manufacturing facility. He stated, “Even Elon Musk is considering Gujarat as his top choice. Since he initiated a survey to find a suitable location for plant setup in India, Gujarat has been on his mind.” When asked about the timeline for the official announcement of Tesla’s India launch, Patel responded, “Perhaps, a formal announcement in this regard will be made very soon. We hope Tesla will come to Gujarat. We will surely welcome them and provide all necessary assistance, just as we did in the past for Tata, Ford, and Suzuki.”

Car Munufacturing Tesla

Although the minister did not specify the exact location, reports suggest that Tesla might establish its Indian base in Sanand, similar to other car manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki and MG Motor. The proximity of Sanand to the Kandla-Mundra port in Gujarat makes it a favorable choice. Tesla had previously hinted at revisiting its investment plans in India after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States earlier this year, where he met with Elon Musk. After the meeting, Musk also mentioned planning to visit India in 2024.

Recently, Union Minister Piyush Goyal visited Tesla’s plant in the United States, confirming significant investment plans as the company aims to source components worth nearly $1.9 billion by the end of this year. Due to high import duties in India, Tesla had decided against investing in the country about a year ago. However, a shift in perspective is now noticeable in the outlook of the American EV manufacturer based in the United States. Tesla currently doesn’t sell its electric cars in India due to the high import duties, but Elon Musk acknowledges the potential for electric vehicles and battery technology in the country. Globally, Tesla offers several top-selling electric cars, including the Model 3, Model S, Model Y, and Model X.
